Why Is Feather Meal Used So Much In Dog Food, And Why We’re Not Fans of It!

Updated: Jul 21

When scanning the label on a bag of commercial dog food, most pet parents look for words like “chicken,” “lamb,” or “fish.” But dig a little deeper, and you might find something far less appetizing hiding in the ingredient list: feather meal.

At Jessica’s K9 Kitchen, we believe in feeding dogs the way nature intended with real, whole, species appropriate ingredients. That’s why we’re taking a closer look at this controversial additive and why we do not support the use of feather meal in pet food.

What Is Feather Meal?

Feather Meal 🪶

Feather meal is exactly what it sounds like a protein powder made from poultry feathers, which are a by-product of the meat industry. These feathers are processed through a method called hydrolysis, where they are cooked under extremely high heat and pressure to break down the hard, indigestible protein called keratin.

The end result is a dry, dusty meal that is technically “protein-rich”

How Is Feather Meal Processed?

The process of turning feathers into pet food involves:

  1. Collection of poultry feathers from slaughterhouses (a waste product).

  2. Steam hydrolysis to break down keratin into smaller protein chains.

  3. Drying to remove moisture.

  4. Grinding into a fine powder, to what we know as feather meal.

This harsh, industrial processing removes any semblance of natural nutrition. What’s left is a sterile, synthetic form of protein that lacks the essential amino acids dogs need to thrive.

Why Do Pet Food Companies Use It?

Simple answer: It’s cheap.

Feather meal is widely used in kibble and prescription diets, especially those labeled as “hypoallergenic” or “limited ingredient,” because:

  • It’s high in crude protein (on paper).

  • It’s inexpensive and readily available.

  • It’s non-recognizable to the immune system, so it’s marketed as “hypoallergenic.”

Just because a protein source doesn't cause an allergic reaction doesn’t mean it’s healthy or even truly digestible.

Let’s be clear: feather meal is not real food. It may boost the protein percentage on the label, but that number doesn’t tell you how much of that protein your dog can actually use.

What to Watch For on Labels?

If you see any of these terms, your dog’s food may contain feather meal:

  • “Hydrolyzed feather meal”

  • “Feather protein”

  • “Hydrolyzed poultry by-product aggregate” (used in some veterinary diets)

  • “Animal protein product” (can be a vague term hiding feather meal)

We recommend contacting the brand directly if you're unsure.

Our Final Thoughts?

Feather meal may be labeled as “high protein,” but in reality, it’s a waste by-product repurposed to cut costs not improve health.

At Jessica’s K9 Kitchen, we believe your dog deserves real, species appropriate nutrition not leftover feathers from a factory floor.

Choose food that’s made with integrity, transparency, and ingredients you can trust.
